Bryn Chainey is a British-Australian filmmaker based in Sydney.
After graduating from Griffith Film School in Brisbane, Bryn spent the better part of a decade living and working in Europe, where he wrote and directed a number of award-winning short films, including Jonah and the Vicarious Nature of Homesickness - an absurdist sci-fi family drama for which he won the emerging director’s prize at the Berlin International Film Festival - and the fantasy Moritz and the Woodwose, which screened in over 60 festivals worldwide.
During his time in Europe, Bryn also directed a slew of music videos - working closely with bands across the continent to create work with a narrative bent and handmade quality - as well as co-founding the Pustnik Screenwriters Residency, an annual program for upcoming European writers and producers.
When his feature screenplay Nothing Else Mattress - a coming-of-age comedy set in Queensland's Moreton Bay in the mid-90s - won a World Production Award at the Torino Film Lab in late 2015, Bryn returned to Australia to develop the project with funding and assistance from Screen Australia.
Since then, in addition to working on the feature, Bryn has continued to direct short films, digital and branded content, as well as music videos for artists including Vera Blue and Thundamentals. His most recent short film Kill Your Dinner was funded through Screen Australia's Hot Shots program and screened at numerous film festivals including Berlin, Rotterdam and Palm Springs.
Bryn has also developed his skills as a film and video editor across diverse projects for clients such as ABC Comedy, Optus Sport, the Australian Labour Party, and Universal Music. As an editor, he brings inventiveness, clarity and rhythm to every project. His direction combines a firm foundation in performance with an eye for crafting unconventional worlds full of imagination and meticulous style.
